Introduction to Scratch Resistance of PVC Outdoor Decking

March 12, 2024

One thing most homeowners rarely think about when building a new outdoor decking is durability. Because scratches are inevitable for families with children and pets. Therefore, you will want scratch-resistant decking. So, many people suggest using PVC decking. But the question is, is the PVC decking easily scratched? Whether there are other options, such as composite decking, etc.

PVC is a thermoplastic used to make decking. PVC outdoor decking consists of 100% plastic and is an alternative to traditional wood trim. But is the PVC decking scratch resistant? It turns out, of course. PVC outdoor decking offers excellent scratch resistance compared to other decorative materials. In general, PVC decking does not visually show signs of scratches compared to wood trim or even composite materials. They have a hard shell that makes them resistant to most forms of damage, including abrasions and scratches. They are not easily damaged under normal circumstances. However, this does not mean that they are completely scratch free. Enough force can still leave unsightly marks on the decking surface. Therefore, you want to minimize and avoid any potential causes of scraping the decking.

After a lot of market research, we concluded that one of the reasons why pvc outdoor decking may be scratched is heavy furniture. Although PVC is scratch resistant, you still want to avoid any potential risk that could damage your decking. Luckily, there are many ways to protect your patio. For example, use furniture fixtures on outdoor terraces as much as possible. It's best to avoid those with metal bases as well, as they can easily scratch your decking. If you do need to place heavy fixtures, you may want to consider buying furniture mats. Alternatively, you can use outdoor rugs. However, be sure to use soft bottoms. While there are many ways to prevent scratches, chances are, you'll still see some marks. So how do you remove them?

There are several ways to remove or at least hide any signs of a scratch. How to do this depends mainly on the severity of the scratch. The usual solution for PVC is to use a hard wax filler in the damaged or marked area, which can eliminate or hide the visual appearance of the scratch. And the new PVC decorative board is scratch resistant. Minor cuts and scratches should not be a problem as PVC boards are highly scratch resistant and unless a lot of pressure is applied, minor cuts and scratches will not show visible signs during their early life, but this does not mean that PVC boards are scratch resistant, it means that they will resist minor pressure.
